JONESBORO, Ark. - Freshman Amy Quick finished second individually to guide the UAB bowling team into 10th after the first day at the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
UAB (29-17) finished 3-2 on Friday in five traditional matches. The Blazers posted a total pinfall of 4,717 to average 188.7 per game. It was the first of two days the teams will compete in traditional games that feature individual performances.
The day started off strong for UAB, as the team picked up its three wins in the first three matches of the day. The Blazers opened with a 983-955 win over Jackson State and then topped in-state rival Alabama State, 928-887.
In the third game, UAB was paired with No. 6 Vanderbilt in its first of two-straight matches against a ranked opponent. The Blazers took the win, 996-987, over the Commodores to improve to 3-0 heading into the fourth match.
UAB dropped its first match of the day, 995-947, to No. 8 Stephen F. Austin before falling to Louisiana Tech in a close match, 874-863.
Individually, Quick averaged 218.9 per game with a total pinfall of 1,094 to earn a second-place finish. She bowled three of the five games over 200, included a career-best 257 in the third game to help the Blazers to a win over nationally ranked Vanderbilt.
Fellow freshman Jessica Mellott took 33rd with a total pinfall of 961 to average 192.20 per game on the day. She finished with two games over 200, including a 218 in the fifth game. Sophomore Madeleine McDuff was 41st averaging 186.0 and senior Ali Long averaged a 184.0 to finished 44th.
