BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB's football team continued its bye-week practice schedule on Tuesday with a two-hour workout, leading up to Wednesday's practice in full pads.
With a 2-1 overall record and plenty of excitement surrounding the program, head coach Bill Clark and his staff say the off week has a come at a great time -- just ahead of the starts to Conference USA action and the contest against FIU on Sept. 27 at Legion Field.
"We came out in helmets and to some people that is a day off," head coach Bill Clark said. "For us, it is really a day to work on timing and work a lot of the little fundamental things that we need to work on. We will have a really good full-pad practice tomorrow and then give them a little time off before conference play starts."
UAB will use the time off to prepare for a league that has built an impressive resume though the first three weeks of the college football season. So far, Conference USA teams are 11-0 against other members of the Group of 5 conferences (American Athletic Conference, Mid-American Conference, the Sun Belt and the Mountain West) and have won seven of those games by three touchdowns or more.
According to Clark, the bye week has helped the Blazers rest up and prepare for what will be a very competitive league schedule.
"I think it is good," Clark said. "I think our guys need to see the reality of what we are about to see and how good our conference is. I don't have to just say it. I think anybody with sense can go out there and see who our teams have beat and who we are playing."
UAB will return to the practice field one final time this week with Wednesday's workout.
