Sand Volleyball Concludes Play at Fiesta on Siesta Key

SIESTA KEY, Fla. – The UAB sand volleyball team concluded play in the Fiesta on Siesta Key tournament on Sunday. The Blazers competed in the bracketed pairs tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
On Friday, Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas finished their match that was postponed from Tulane due to weather. The pair defeated ULM in three sets to win the Upper Division bracket.
UAB (3-7) had six pairs participate in the tournament this weekend. The pairs were split among five different pools in the FUN Brackets.
The Blazers’ top two pairs were slated into the Silver Division bracket. UAB’s twos Rachel Fairbanks and Sara Rishell earned a win in the first round over College of Charleston’s duo in three sets, 21-10,18-21,18-16. LSU then knocked them out in the second round with a 21-16, 21-15 win.
No. 1 duo of Hirini and Thomas fell to College of Charleston’s pair, 26-24, 21-17 in the first round.
Sunday featured three brackets in the 16-team single elimination format. No. 3 pair Alison Woods and Sam Serley competed in Bracket A, but fell to ULM, 25-20, in the first round.
Gabby Deshotel and Becca Howard dropped a 25-20 decision to FGCU in the first round of Bracket B, and Amber Treace and Ally Slaughter fell to UNF’s duo, 25-22, in the first round of Bracket C.
UAB had a strong showing from its No. 6 pair, as Lindsay Simmons and Emma Schroer teamed up to finished 2-1 on the day. They defeated Stetson in the first round, then topped College of Charleston in the second round before falling to FIU in the finals.
