Men's Tennis Defeats Southern Miss, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB's men's tennis team won the doubles point and then claimed four of six singles matches as the Blazers defeated visiting Southern Miss, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
UAB (5-5, 3-1 Conference USA) captured the doubles point for the eighth time in 10 dual matches this season as it got back in the win column after a pair of losses two weekends ago in Atlanta (to Georgia State and Nebraska).
The Blazers grabbed a 1-0 lead on the strength of wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Chris Helliar and Mitchell Martell were 8-2 winners at No. 2 over the USM duo of Alex Doleac and Chao-Yu Huang while Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rafael Rondino defeated Brad Marriott and Grigory Trotsenko, 8-3, at the No. 3 position.
The No. 1 match with UAB's Lucas Dirube and Donovan McSeveney going against Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar was halted once the doubles point was clinched by the Blazers. Southern Miss was up 6-5 at the time the match was suspended.
In singles, Helliar improved to 21-6 on the year with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Southern Miss' Alvarado. At No. 2, Rafael Rondino downed the Golden Eagles' Alex Doleac, 6-2, 6-3.
UAB picked up its other two singles wins at No. 4 as McSeveney defeated Marriott, 6-2, 6-3, and at No. 6 as Pinto took a 6-3, 6-0 win over Grigory Trotsenko.
Southern Miss (6-7, 0-1 C-USA) notched its two wins in the match with a 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 by Chao-Yu over Dirube and at the No. 5 spot as Escobar edged the Blazers' Stepan Vancurik, 7-5, 6-4.
UAB will be back in action Sunday when the Blazers play host to Belmont in a 1:00 p.m. CT match at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
