BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team went through a lengthy workout Sunday afternoon as the Blazers returned to practice after eight days off for spring break.
The Blazers worked out in full pads at Legion Field as head coach Bill Clark's team held its sixth practice of spring drills. Clark and his coaching staff were anxious to see how their team responded to the time off.
"We had some good energy before the break and we reminded them of that and what that energy should look like," said Clark. "Hopefully, we'll see more of that on Wednesday (next practice). "It was a long day, but I thought it was a good day.
Clark was hoping that the Blazers wouldn't show the effects of the layoff.
"The only way to do it is practice," he said. "You just have to get them out here. It's a routine. These guys are routine oriented and when you get out of that routine, that's when it gets tough.
As the Blazers head toward the halfway point of spring drills, Clark said he is looking to see who comes daily to practice ready to compete.
"I think we're really looking at who hates to lose and who wants to come and compete every day," the first-year UAB coach said. "And in the drills, who fights through it and who treats every play as an important play? That's who we're looking for. I think the technique's important, but that's probably secondary to the guys who just fight. Who's out there fighting?
