Men's Tennis Defeats Troy, 4-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ---- UAB's men's tennis team won the doubles point and at the top three singles positions to claim a 4-1 victory Friday over Troy in a first round match at the Middle Tennessee Shootout.
Friday's matches were moved to the Nashboro Village indoor courts due to inclement weather.
The Blazers (10-6), seeded No. 2 in the tournament, will now play No. 6 seed Middle Tennessee which defeated No. 3 seed Illinois State, 4-0, Friday. The match with the Blue Raiders is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. UAB has won four consecutive matches and six of its past seven.
UAB's three wins in singles all were decided in three sets.
Stepan Vancurik clinched the fourth point for the Blazers with his win at No. 3 singles as he defeated Troy's Pablo Moreno, 6-5 (5), 4-6, 6-4.
Seniors Chris Helliar and Rafael Rondino also were winners in singles. Helliar was a 6-5 (4), 4-6, 6-5 (4) winner over Dias at No. 1 while Rondino downed Sami Ghorbel, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.
The Trojans (5-13) claimed their only win in the match at No. 4 singles as Daniel Bustamante edged past Donovan McSeveney, 6-5 (5), 6-5 (5). The matches at No. 5 and 6 singles were suspended with Luiz Felipe Pinto and Lucas Dirube leading at each spot, respectively.
In doubles, UAB was a winner at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Helliar and Mitchell Martell defeated Dias and Moreno, 6-3, at No. 1. Dirube and McSeveney beat the Troy tandem of Mansingh Athare and Ghorbel, 6-1.
