BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Hunter Mullins of the UAB football team was named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced on Monday. The Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes who excel on and off their respective fields of competition.
After redshirting in 2010, the Tallassee, Ala. native is in his fourth and final year on the field with the Blazers. He has a 3.32 GPA majoring in exercise science and has been named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll three times.
Mullins is the Blazers’ all-time career-record holder in punt average and was named the 2014 C-USA Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. He was named a candidate for the 2014 Ray Guy Award last week, which recognizes the nation’s top punter.
Mullins has had an impressive season on the field, averaging 44.8 yards per punt, which ranks fifth in C-USA. He has pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 16 times and has 11 punts of 50 yards or more, including a career-long 65-yard punt vs. FIU this season.
He is UAB’s career record holder at 44.1 yards per punt and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection last season.
Mullins and the Blazers return home to Legion Field on Saturday to host Louisiana Tech. Kick is set for 11 a.m.
