Cross Country Finishes 19th at Greater Louisville Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB cross country team finished 19th out of 33 teams at the Greater Louisville Classic at EP Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., with a team score of 495. Six of the Blazers' eight runners turned in season bests, led by freshman Rebecca Evans' 17:46.76 to finish 36th overall.
“Today's result was about what I expected,” said head coach Tony Houchin. “We really need to tighten our 1-5 spread if we want to do anything by Conference USA Championships. There is still a lot of time for us to improve though.”
Sophomore Sarah Livett recorded her best time of the season, finishing in 17:54.48. Livett was 48th out of a field of 300 runners. Junior Lucy Crookes was the third Blazer to break the 18-minute barrier, stopping the clock in 17:58.48. Crookes just missed out on finishing inside the the top 50, crossing in 52nd-place.
Other Blazer finishes included senior Lauren Scott (19:06.37, 192nd), junior Kristie Leybourne (19:47.05, 255th), senior Jenna Wesley (20:20.12, 276th), freshman Allison Wortel (20:48.78, 287th) and sophomore Laurie Pray (21:59.36, 300th).
WKU's junior Katie Lever was the first C-USA runner to finish, turning in a time of 17:37.39 for 25th-place. The Hilltoppers finished first of the C-USA schools participating, earning 12th-place, as Middle Tennessee took 13th.
No. 16 Wisconsin claimed the team title with a score of 37. No. 21 West Virginia took second with a tally of 64, while No. 22 Virginia Tech rounded out the top-three teams with a score of 194.
The Badgers placed three runners in the top four with sophomore Sarah Disanza taking to individual title with a time of 16:41.92.
UAB returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the University of Evansville Invitational in Evansville, Ind.
