Nelson Named C-USA Special Teams Player Of The Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB senior J.J. Nelson has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in last Saturday's loss at Arkansas.
The Midfield, Ala. native had another sensational day on special teams as he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, and overall, totaled 166 return yards in the contest at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
The nation's third-ranked kickoff returner also returned a pair of punts for 39 yards, including a 35-yarder, at Arkansas. Nelson had two kickoff returns for 127 yards and finished with 166 overall return yards. He has two kickoff returns this season for touchdowns and three in his career, a UAB record.
Nelson is averaging 34.7 yards per kick return to lead Conference USA and rank No. 3 nationally. Nelson is also averaging a league-best 10.3 yards on punt returns this season and is No. 24 in the country.
This is his second weekly C-USA honor in 2014 and Nelson's third career honor.
The Blazers (4-4, 2-2 C-USA) resume conference play Saturday when they play at Florida Atlantic (6 p.m. CT).
