MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Middle Tennessee running back Reggie Whatley ran for 100 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, as Middle Tennessee beat UAB 34-22 on Saturday at Floyd Stadium
Middle Tennessee (5-3, 4-1 Conference USA) entered the fourth quarter trailing 22-21 but Whatley's 67-yard touchdown gave the Blue Raiders the lead for good.
Austin Grammer, who came into the game completing 72.7 percent of his passes in conference play, completed just 6 of 19 passes, but threw for a pair of touchdowns, the last of which put the game out of reach with 2:08 to play.
After falling behind 27-22, UAB (4-3, 2-2) gave up two straight interceptions to Middle Tennessee's T.T. Barber and Kevin Byard on the Blazers' next two possessions, the latter setting up Grammer's pass to Marcus Henry for the 30-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-9 to give MT the 34-22 win.
"I thought we played our tails off," head coach Bill Clark said. "I knew it was going to be like this. I thought it would come down to one play at the end of the game. I told the team all week it would, and we just came out on the wrong end of it."
Jordan Howard ran for 121 yards and one touchdown on 32 carries for UAB -- his fourth game of over 100 yards rushing on the season and the seventh of his career. Blazer wide receiver Jamari Staples finished with a season-high four catches for 83 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown reception.
This was the fifth meeting between the two teams and Middle Tennessee now leads the all-time series, 3-2. It was the first meeting between the two programs in Murfreesboro since 1995.
UAB now travels to Arkansas to face the Razorbacks at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday in a game that will air on the SEC Network.
