TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- The UAB men's tennis team opened its 2014 dual match season Saturday, falling to No. 33-ranked Alabama, 4-1, at the Roberta Allison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
The Blazers picked up their only win in the match with a victory at No. 6 singles by sophomore Luis Felipe Pinto. Pinto downed the Crimson Tide's Hayes Brewer, 6-2, 6-2.
The Blazers claimed the first doubles match as Rafael Rondino and Pinto were 6-2 winners at No. 3 over the Tide tandem of Andrew Goodwin and Stuart Kenyon. But Alabama seized the momentum with victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Nikko Madregallejo and Daniil Proskura defeated the UAB duo of Chris Helliar and Mitchell Martell, 6-4, at No. 1 while Becker O'Shaughnessy and Sean Donohue took a 6-3 win at No. 2 over UAB's Donovan McSeveney and Lucas Dirube.
In singles, Alabama jumped to a 3-0 lead as O'Shaughnessy, listed at No. 51 in the ITA singles rankings, beat UAB's Rondino, 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Madregallejo was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Dirube at the No. 3 spot.
Pinto trimmed the Crimson Tide advantage to 3-1 with his win at No. 6 singles. But Alabama's Proskura, ranked No. 14 nationally in singles, handed UAB's Helliar only his third loss (now 16-3) of the 2013-14 season, winning 6-2, 6-2.
The matches at No. 4 and 5 singles were halted once the Tide clinched the victory. Kenyon was leading UAB's McSeveney, 6-1, 4-5, at No. 4 while Goodwin held a 6-4, 3-3 advantage over the Blazers' Martell.
