BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team opens its 2013 fall season this weekend as the Blazers send four players to the 46th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships at Athens, Ga.
Two seniors -- Chris Helliar and Rafael Rondino -- and a pair of junior college All-Americans in Mitchell Martell and Donovan McSeveny will compete this weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Many of the top players in the southeast will play this weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. UAB head coach Derek Tarr knows the competition will be challenging this weekend but is anxious to see his players take the court
"I will say this," said Tarr. "The effort we have seen the past few weeks has been extraordinary. They have really been working hard, both on the practice courts and in conditioning. With four new players this year, we obviously have a long way to go, but I've been pleased with what I've seen so far."
The tournament will feature three singles divisions and two in doubles. The event will run through Monday.
The Blazers' Rafael Rondino will play in the Division I draw. Rondino, who played his first season at UAB last year after transferring from Auburn, will go against Barry University's Romain Costamagna in Friday's opening round.
Helliar will take on Clemson's Robert Dudle in his first match in the Division II singles draw. Both Martell and McSeveny will participate in the Division III draw and will play opening round matches Friday as well. Martell will meet Renato Lombardi while McSeveny goes against the winner of the first round match between Alabama's Saxon Buehning and Clemson's Brett Lett.
In doubles, Helliar and Rondino will play in the Division I draw and will meet the Virginia Tech tandem of Jai Corbett and Hunter Koontz. Martell and McSeveny will go against Furman's Alex Christ and Luke Synn in their opening round doubles match in the Division II draw.
