BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB sand volleyball team stopped North Florida’s 10 match win streak on Saturday as the Blazers rolled to a 3-2 win over the Ospreys.
With the victory, the Blazers improve to 10-5 overall on the season and will face North Florida on Sunday at Noon CT. The Ospreys fall to 10-2 this season with Saturday’s loss.
UAB sieged the early momentum with strong play from the bottom two pairs. In an exhibition contest at the sixth position, Blazers Kate Morrell and Mariah McCallum ousted UNF’s Ebony Gunn and Kayla Fessler, 21-17, 21-10, before UAB’s duo of Becca Howard and Sam Skinner picked up a 22-20, 21-17 triumph at the No. 5 spot.
With the Blazers up 1-0 after the first two matches, the two teams split the third and fourth flights as UAB’s Alison Woods and Sam Serley rebounded from a tough first-set loss to defeat Anna Wagner and Emily Strack 11-21, 21-17, 15-6 to give their team a 2-0 advantage.
North Florida’s Julie Trembley and Britt Chesseons then cut into UAB’s lead with a 21-19, 20-22, 15-8 over Sara Rishell and Rachel Fairbanks.
With the score at 2-1 in favor of the Blazers heading into the final two courts, UAB looked to clinch the match with just one win.
Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas delivered that victory as they rolled over Anna Budinska and Dagnija Medina, 21-18, 21-15 to seal the dual and give the Blazers a 3-1 lead.
On the last court, North Florida picked up the final win of the day as Cori Whitmire and Carolyn Jenkins defeated Ally Slaughter and Kirsten Gallagher, 18-21, 22-20, 15-13 in the second flight.
Sunday’s Noon dual against North Florida will be UAB’s final home contest of the season. The Blazers head to the Florida State Tournament on April 20-21.
