BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Tulane grabbed a 28-27 lead with 17:02 to go in the game and held onto the advantage the rest of the way in a 57-52 victory over the UAB women’s basketball team on Thursday.
The Blazers (15-10, 6-6 Conference USA) were outmuscled by Tulane (19-6, 8-4 C-USA) on the boards, 48-33, while the Green Wave scored 18 second-chance points en route to the win.
Thursday’s loss marks the first for UAB in Bartow Arena since Jan. 31(Southern Miss, 54-51) and gives Tulane its fifth win in the last seven contests on the year.
UAB junior Ashley Grimes finished with a game-high 18 points, while Danielle Bragg paced the Green Wave with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Thursday’s game featured a back-and-forth battle between the two teams in the first half with three ties and seven lead changes in the first 20 minutes.
UAB built as much as a five-point lead (12-7) thanks to two-straight 3-pointers from senior guard Kelsie Weynand, before that slim cushion was stopped by a 6-0 Tulane rally.
Neither team could establish more than a two-point lead the rest of the half as UAB took a 25-24 advantage at the break. The Blazers held the lead despite being outrebounded 28-14 in the first frame, including a 14-2 Green Wave advantage on the offensive glass.
Tulane quickly jumped on UAB in the second half, going on an 8-0 run from 18:30 to the 16-miniute mark to take a seven-point advantage, 34-27, with 15:53 remaining.
The Green Wave pushed that advantage to as much as 10 with the score at 44-34 and 10:23 on the clock.
UAB got as close as three, 55-52, with 18 seconds remaining thanks to two 3-point heaves from Grimes. Her third attempt fell just short, however, as Tulane held on for the 57-52 win.
The Blazers now hit the road for two-straight games away from Bartow Arena. UAB takes on Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT before trekking to East Carolina on Feb. 28 for a 6 p.m. CT tip.
