RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Ashley Grimes drove the ball down the court and converted a layup with 15 seconds left that gave the UAB women's basketball team the lead and eventually the 53-49 win over Richmond on Sunday afternoon.

“It was a great team win,” said head coach Randy Norton. “We talked last week that we want to compete for 40 minutes on every possession and I thought our team did that tonight.”

UAB (2-2) and Richmond (1-2) played a tight game, as neither team led by more than six points. It came down to the final seconds as the teams were tied 49-49 when Richmond called a timeout with 42 seconds remaining. The Blazers' defense kept the Spiders off the board and allowed UAB to setup its offense.

The Blazers inbounded the ball with 24.5 seconds left, when Grimes drove the ball on the baseline and made the layup to give UAB the 51-49 lead with 15 seconds left. UAB go another stop on defense and a foul sent Black to the free throw line with 0.6 seconds left. She hit both shots to secure the win.

UAB finished with three players in double-figures, led by senior Karisma Chapman who had a season-high 19. Sophomore Chelsee Black added 11, including the two free throws that put the game out of reach, and Grimes finished with 10 points.

For the Spiders, Olivia Healy tallied 19 points to lead the team. She was the only Richmond player to finish in double-figures.

The Blazers shot 37 percent from the field, and held Richmond to 29.6 percent in the second half. UAB also capitalized from the free throw line, making 11 of 15 overall and seven of eight in the second half.

Chapman, sophomore Dy'man Webb and Grimes each grabbed eight rebounds. Grimes also came away with a career-high five steals on the day. Sophomore Kayla Anderson had her fourth-consecutive game with a blocked shot, finishing with three.

UAB was on the board first as Chapman scored a layup in the first four seconds. Richmond rallied and took its largest lead, 13-7, with 10:35 remaining in the first half. The Blazers countered with an 8-2 run to tie it up 15-15.

From there, the teams traded points and the lead. The Spiders' Healy hit a jumper just before the half to take a 25-24 lead into the break. Richmond held onto the lead until the 8:19 mark in the second half, when Black hit two free throws to put UAB ahead by one. The lead would change three more times, but UAB was able to close out the game in the final seconds.
