Bowling Heads To Hornet Classic This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB’s bowling team will travel just down the road to Montgomery, Ala. for the Hornet Classic this weekend. The tournament will begin Friday, Nov. 15 and run through Sunday, Nov. 17.
The three-day invitational will feature 11 teams. No. 6 Sam Houston State returns after winning the tournament last season, other participants include tournament-host Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Texas Southern, Louisiana Tech, Jackson State, Grambling State, Southern, Florida A&M and Tulane.
UAB (3-12) is coming off of the Crusader Classic this past weekend. The Blazers tallied three wins, including one over No. 6 Sam Houston State on the first day of the tournament.
UAB returns top scorers Marissa Ferreira and Leah Walker from last year’s team. Ferreira averaged 182.56 and Walker 176.07 last season. The team will also look to returners Cybil Long, Jennafer Mellott, Qituwrah King and Marisa DiPonio to contribute.
Walker, Long and DiPonio each put together solid performances in the Crusader Classic leading the team in total pinfall on the second day. Last weekend, freshmen Lauren Douglas and Bailey James made their first appearances for the Blazers.
The tournament is set to start at 10:45 a.m. CT on Friday with Baker games. The teams will them compete in five traditional games on Saturday, with action beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT. The tournament will conclude Sunday with the best 4-of-7 Baker matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
UAB will have a break for the month of December, before returning to action in January with the Mid-Winter Invitational set to begin Friday, Jan. 17, 2014.
