BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB football team hit the practice field for the final time this week on Thursday afternoon in preparation for the Conference USA opener against Florida Atlantic on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Head coach Garrick McGee talked to the media earlier this week about the upcoming game against the Owls at Legion Field. He feels that UAB’s non-conference scheduled has prepared the team well for C-USA play.
“It’s good to test yourself and see how tough you really are,” McGee said. “We have had a physical non-conference schedule. We want to play traditional, hard-nosed and tough football.”
Florida Atlantic will enter the matchup 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. McGee knows that the Owls have a lot of similarities with UAB as both are looking to improve in the 2013 season. FAU’s last two games included a 42-35 overtime loss to Middle Tennessee and last Saturday’s narrow 18-14 loss to Rice.
“They are a lot like us,” added McGee. “(Head coach) Carl (Pelini) is in his second year there. They went 3-9 last year. They played a tough opening game against Miami and have played three tough conference games.”
