Helliar Moves Into Singles Quarters At UTSA/ITA Regional

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- UAB senior Chris Helliar won twice in singles Friday, including a win over the No. 4 seed, to advance to the quarterfinals of the UTSA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Helliar, from Bournemouth, England, defeated Alabama's Hayes Brewer (7-5, 6-2) in third round play before ousting fourth-seeded and 50th-ranked Daniel Leitner of South Alabama (6-7, 6-2, ret.).
Helliar will now go against Alabama's Becker O'Shaughnessey, the tournament's No. 7 seed, at 1:00 p.m. Helliar is now 15-1 in singles this fall in three tournaments.
The Blazers' other singles entry still playing Friday, fellow senior Rafael Rondino, won a third round match over Samford's Elliott Barnwell (6-4, 7-6) before falling to No. 3 seed Malte Stropp of Mississippi State (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, Helliar and Donovan McSeveney were winners Friday and moved into Saturday's third round. The UAB tandem downed Takuma Ohashi and Cedric Rutsaert of Tulane, 8-5. Helliar and McSeveney now will face tournament No. 2 seed and 15th-ranked O'Shaughnessey and Daniel Proskura of Alabama at 9 a.m. Saturday.
UAB's other two doubles teams faced tough matches as Nick Iannuzzi and Luiz Pinto lost to top-seeded Jordan Angus and Stropp of Mississippi State, 8-0, while Rondino and Lucas Dirube dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 3 seed Boris Arias and Chris Simpson of LSU.
