Men's Tennis Team Wraps Up Weekend Action

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team wrapped up play here Sunday in a tightly-contested competition with host Middle Tennessee at the Dale Short Shootout.
The Blue Raiders won three of the four singles matches that were played between the teams, including each of the two that were extended to three sets.
Blazers' senior David Zimmerman lost in singles for the first time this weekend as he was edged by MTSU's Ettore Zito, 7-6, (7-4), 5-7, 7-6 (7-5). Meanwhile, UAB's Tom Puetz also dropped a tight three-setter as he fell to Yannick Born, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
A pair of Blazer newcomers provided UAB with its two singles wins Sunday as Rafael Rondino and Korhan Ates were straight-set winners.
Rondino defeated MTSU's Marlon Brand, 6-2, 7-5, while Ates was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Belmont's Henrik Claesson. Tomas Legzdins gave the Blue Raiders a singles win over UAB's Lucas Dirube, 7-6, 6-3.
UAB and Middle Tennessee split their two doubles matches with Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rondino downing MTSU's duo of Legzdins and Zito, 8-5. Born and Brand gave the Blue Raiders a doubles victory as they edged UAB's Puetz and Zimmerman, 9-7.
