Men's Tennis Team Opens Fall Slate At MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team opened its fall schedule here Friday as the Blazers won four of seven singles matches at the Dale Short Shootout.
The Blazers captured wins by senior David Zimmerman, along with Rafael Rondino, Tom Puetz and Luis Felipe Pinto.
Zimmerman was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Badr Cherradi of SIU, 6-3, 6-4, while Rondino claimed a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Brandon Florez. UAB's Puetz was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 winner over SIU's Jonny Rigby. Pinto took a tight 7-6, 7-5 victory over Orhan Spahic.
Meanwhile, the Blazers' Lucas Dirube fell in a three-setter to Rafael Cuadrillero, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, with Martijn Admiraal taking a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over UAB newcomer Korhan Ates. Szymon Opieczonek gave SIU its third win as he downed Nick Iannuzzi, 6-1, 5-5, ret.
In doubles play, Puetz and Zimmerman were 8-6 winners over the SIU tandem of Admiraal and Florez. Cherradi and Rigby defeated Dirube and Rondino, 8-4, while Opieczonek and Rigby edged past Ates and Pinto, 9-7.
UAB will be back in action Saturday as the Blazers take on Lipscomb. On Sunday, the Blazers culminate the weekend action with hidden dual competition against host Middle Tennessee.
