Blazers Make Strides On Offense

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team spent Tuesday morning’s practice under lights on campus before the clouds cleared towards the end of workouts. The Blazers worked out for two hours in full pads during the session.
Following practice, offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm discussed how the team is beginning to get a stronger grasp of what they are trying to do on the offensive side of the ball.
“I think they are feeling more comfortable each and every day, especially when we are in padded practices in as close to live settings as we can be,” Brohm said.
Brohm evaluated the quarterback position for the Blazers, which is led by returning starter Jonathan Perry. Other players working out at that position include Austin Brown, Joe Bento, Ben Craft, Josh Greer and Mike Miller.
Last season, Perry appeared in 12 games, making eight starts, while throwing for 2,042 yards and 10 touchdowns. In addition, Perry showed the ability to use his legs, rushing for 294 yards and three scores.
With a new offense in place for the 2012 season, it will be important for the quarterback position to get the ball to the different play makers the Blazers have on offense.
“Our quarterback is getting better, he feels good about (the offense),” Brohm said. “We like our skill players and we have to find a way to get them the ball.
“I think all the guys are feeling comfortable in what we are doing and now it’s just a matter of putting them in as may 11-on-11 team settings so they can get through any of the kinks that need to be worked out.”
The Blazers open the season at Legion Field against Troy on Sept. 1, with kick off set for 11 a.m. CT.
