BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB football team practiced in full pads for roughly two hours Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the first matchup of the season against Troy on Sept. 1.
"There has been a little more excitement," defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Reggie Johnson said. "Obviously the closer you get, the higher intensity you have, but our focus has been on getting better on a daily basis, getting those fundamentals down.
While time may be ticking down toward the Blazers' first game, practice has predominantly focused on the UAB game plan.
"It doesn't matter what the other team does as long as we take care of ourselves and make sure we're doing our part right," Johnson said. "It's still camp, but we are doing some game planning, and we have about eight more days to do it."
The secondary, a group primarily made up of freshmen, will have a big task once the season begins. Johnson notes that they will all have to step up and make an impact in order for UAB to be successful.
"They're buying into what we're teaching, and we've all seen a lot of growth throughout camp," Johnson added. "We feel good about where we are."
UAB's game against the Trojans will kick off at 11 a.m. CT at Legion Field and will be broadcast by Fox College Sports TV.
