BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team was back on the practice field Wednesday night for its 12th workout of spring practice.
The Blazers, which had Monday's scheduled session rained out, practiced for the first time since last Saturday's scrimmage. The team spent two hours going through drills in full pads as the 2012 Spring Game continues to draw near.
UAB has just one practice session remaining before the Spring Game, which is scheduled for Saturday at Noon at West Campus Field.
The game will be part of Saturday's Blazer FanFest, which starts at 9 a.m. and features inflatables, face painting, balloon artists and a performance by the BeatLads, a Beatles tribute band.
Following Wednesday's practice, assistant head coach and defensive line coach Jimmy Williams spoke about what he has seen from his front four this spring.
"It's early, but I know we have some quality young men and they have tremendous desire and great attitude," he said. "Those are the foundations you need."
The Blazers return a pair of starting D-linemen in defensive end Diaheem Watkins and Connor Boyett, who has moved from end to tackle this spring. At least four other key linemen saw significant playing time last year, as well, and will help provide the kind of depth Williams says is so important.
"I like the talent that we have," he said. "Obviously, we have some recruits coming in who will add some depth to it. That's always the battle up front is having enough guys, particularly in the middle to latter stages of the season. That's where it's critical."
UAB will return to the practice field Friday for its final tuneup before the Spring Game. Friday's practice is scheduled for 5 p.m.
