Blazer Tennis Team Drops 6-1 Decision To South Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team fell to a ranked team for the third time this week on Friday as the Blazers dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 59 South Alabama at George Ward Park.
The Jaguars (15-5) won a tight doubles competition, taking a 1-0 lead by capturing wins at No. 2 and 3 singles after losing at No. 1.
UAB's Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman gave the No. 65 Blazers (16-7) an early advantage with an 8-4 victory at the top position over USA's Hanno Bartsch and Christian Kuehne.
The Jaguars didn't take long to seize the momentum with close wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Cody Hall and Daniel Leitner downed the Blazers' duo of Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar, 8-6, before the tandem of Alex Bernard and Romain Bocaert defeated Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser, 9-7.
Dauw Kruger gave South Alabama a 2-0 lead with his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over James Gardner. Bocaert made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 position over Manlow before Puetz provided the Blazers with their only point of the match in a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Blake Gregor.
Hall claimed a three-setter over Moser at No. 4, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, before Leitner edged past Helliar, 6-4, 7-6, at the No. 3 singles spot. Bernard gave USA its sixth point of the match with a hard-fought win at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, over UAB's Zimmerman.
The Blazers will play their final home match of the season on Sunday when they play host to No. 33-ranked and Conference USA foe Memphis. The match is scheduled to start at Noon at George Ward Park.
