BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team yielded the doubles point but then came back to win four straight singles matches as the Blazers won for the second day in a row at the Conference USA Shootout, defeating Tulane, 4-1.
After losing two of three doubles matches and losing the doubles point for only the fourth time this season, UAB came back strong with wins at No. 6, 4, 2 and 1 singles. The Blazers also were leading at the No. 3 and 5 positions before the match was clinched and play on those courts was halted.
UAB junior Tom Puetz, who lost his singles match Friday in the Blazers' win over East Carolina, turned things around Saturday as he quickly tied the score at 1-1 with his 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles over Tulane's Tajuma Ohashi.
UAB's Chris Helliar helped stymie a Tulane momentum shift with his play at No. 3 singles. He fought off a pair of match points against Shaye Wali and claimed the second set to force a third.
Daniel Moser gave the Blazers a 2-1 advantage with his 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Rodrigo Rappaccioli. David Zimmerman made it 3-1 UAB with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph over Joe Young at the No. 2 spot.
Danny Manlow closed out the match for the Blazers with his three-set win over Tulane's Idan Mark at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
UAB improved its record to 15-4 this season overall and 2-1 in conference play. Tulane fell to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in C-USA play.
The Green Wave took a 1-0 lead in singles on the strength of wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Mark and Young outlasted UAB's duo of Puetz and Zimmerman at No. 1, 9-8, while Rappaccioli and Wali were 8-4 winners at No. 3 over Lucas Dirube and Helliar.
Manlow and Moser claimed the Blazers' win in doubles with their 8-2 victory at No. 2 over the Wave's Bernstein and Ohashi.
The Blazers will play their third and final match of the three-day event Sunday when they play host to Southern Miss at 2:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles downed East Carolina, 4-1, on Saturday.
