Men's Tennis Claims 5-1 Win Over USC Upstate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won five of six singles matches in a shortened match Saturday, defeating USC Upstate, 5-1, at George Ward Park.
The teams played singles first due to the threat of inclement weather and canceled doubles after the Blazers clinched the match.
UAB (3-1) won at the No. 2-6 positions in singles and captured four of those matches in straight sets.
Danny Manlow was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles over USC Upstate's Matthias Kidler while Chris Helliar downed Gonzalo Blanco at No. 3 by a 6-2, 7-6 (3) score.
At No. 4 singles, the Blazers' Daniel Moser took a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Yvon Haessig with Lucas Dirube winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 over Upstate's Pierre Vernin.
UAB's Tom Puetz gave his team its final point with a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Tyler Grove.
The Spartans' notched their only point in the match at No. 1 singles as Ramiro Blanco outlasted UAB's David Zimmerman, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 10-4.
UAB won its second match in a row and second in three days. The Blazers defeated North Alabama (7-0) on Thursday in their home opener. The Spartans saw their record fall to 1-1 with the loss.
The Blazers will be in action next Friday, Feb. 10 when they play at crosstown foe Samford in a 5 p.m. match.
