Men's Tennis Team Defeats Troy, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won the doubles point and five of six singles matches here Tuesday as the Blazers cruised to a 6-1 victory over visiting Troy.
UAB (6-2) bounced back from Sunday's 4-3 loss at Vanderbilt by sweeping doubles and then capturing wins at No. 2-6 singles.
David Zimmerman (No. 2), Chris Helliar (No. 3) and Tom Puetz (No. 6) won in straight sets for the Blazers while Daniel Moser (No. 3) and Lucas Dirube (No. 5) claimed victories in three sets.
Zimmerman was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles over Troy's Sami Ghorbel while Helliar took a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 3 over Jamie Eccleton. Puetz won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot over the Trojans' Ture Skinner.
At the No. 4 position, Moser outlasted Patrick Eichler, 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 while Dirube rallied at No. 5 for the Blazers, defeating Tadju Davies, 3-6,6-1, 10-3.
The Trojans (1-5) got their only win on the day at the No. 1 position as Mansingh downed UAB's Danny Manlow, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Puetz and Zimmerman were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles over Eichler and Skinner with Manlow and Moser teaming at No. 2 for the Blazers for an 8-5 win over Mansingh Athare and Eccleton. Dirube and Helliar gave UAB at No. 3 doubles as they Blazer tandem beat Troy's team of Ghorbel and Rouchdi.
The Blazers will travel to Tulsa, Okla. this weekend as they take on Oklahoma State Saturday morning (10:00) before meeting No. 23-ranked Tulsa Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
