BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior forward Karisma Chapman scored a game-high 17 points Monday evening, as the UAB women's basketball team defeated the University of Alabama at Huntsville, 74-35, at Bartow Arena.
In her first appearance this preseason for the Blazers, Chapman finished just two rebounds (8) shy of a double-double and scored 16 of her points in the first half, while teammate and UAB junior guard Ashley Grimes continued her strong exhibition play with 16 points and five rebounds.
"Karisma is a tough matchup for anybody in the country," head coach Audra Smith said. "It is good to see her have a strong performance in her first action this year because she is a leader for this team and somebody we will depend on the rest of the way."
The Chargers came out with a strong effort in the first ten minutes of the game and battled to just a four-point deficit at the 14-minute mark. Up 14-10, the Blazers then held UAH to just two points over the next six minutes and claimed a 39-17 lead at the break.
Coach Smith's team continued its strong showing in the second half, holding the Chargers to just 33-percent shooting in the final period on its way to a 74-35 victory.
The Blazers conclude the 2012 preseason schedule with the win and take on Austin Peay Friday at Bartow Arena. Opening tip for that contest is slated for Noon CT.
