UAB Doubles Team Advances At USTA/ITA Southern Regional

AUBURN, Ala. ----- Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar advanced in doubles and Dirube and Tom Puetz won consolation singles matches to lead the UAB men's tennis team Friday at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Dirube and Helliar will play in Saturday's third round of doubles after defeating the Alabama duo of Carlos Taborga and Rens Van Der Vis, 8-6. Dirube and Helliar will now play the No. 2-seeded team of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp from Mississippi State.
UAB's Rafael Rondino, a transfer from Auburn, lost his second round match in the main draw of singles, falling to Jarryd Botha of Alabama, 7-6 (1), 6-2.
Puetz and Helliar won their consolation singles matches Friday to move into Saturday's third round. Puetz cruised past Troy's Josh Dogar-Hurd, 6-2, 6-0, while Helliar downed Tommy Cundy, also from Troy, 6-0, 6-2.
Dirube won one match in consolation singles play as he beat Sami Ghorbel of Troy, 6-4, 6-2. He later fell to Southern Miss' Vasco Valerde, 6-2, 6-1.
