Men's Tennis Shines Saturday At Samford Fall Invite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team enjoyed a productive second day of play Saturday at the Samford Fall Invitational as the Blazers claimed wins in five matches.
The Blazers won four of five singles matches against Jacksonville State. Junior Chris Helliar, seeing his first action of the fall this weekend, won in straight sets over Igor Santos, 7-6, 7-5.
Korhan Ates was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over the Gamecocks' Felipe Diaz while the Blazers' Luiz Felipe Pinto outlasted Felipe Wenzel, 7-5, 5-7, 11-9. David Cooper gave UAB its final singles win of the day with a 6-4, 6-7, 2-1, ret. victory over Guilherme Pansera.
Jacksonville State notched its only win against the Blazers as Felipe Watanabe downed UAB's Nick Iannuzzi, 6-4, 6-3.
Meanwhile in doubles action, Troy won two of three matches against the Blazers.
UAB registered its win as Ates and Pinto defeated the Trojan duo of Sam Ghorbel and Patrick Eichler, 9-8. Troy's team of Mansingh Athare and Andre Stabile edged the Blazers' team of Lucas Dirube and Helliar, 8-6. The Trojans also gained a win with Daniel Bustamante and Anas Rouchdi defeating the UAB tandem of Cooper and Iannuzzi, 8-1.
The Blazers are playing the three-day event this weekend with three of their top players (David Zimmerman, Tom Puetz and Rafael Rondino).
Play will conclude Sunday at the Samford Tennis Center.
