Helliar Advances To Quarterfinals Of Seminole Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- UAB sophomore Chris Helliar won a pair of straight set matches here Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the "A" Division singles draw at the Seminole Invitational.
In the "B" Division singles draw, sophomore Lucas Dirube won a second round match after a first round bye and also moved into Saturday's quarterfinals. Dirube was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Vitor Belucci of Bethune-Cookman in the second round.
Helliar, a native of Bournemouth, England, defeated Bethune-Cookman's Marc Misanovic, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round and then downed Daniel Sotomarino of North Florida later in the day, 6-3, 6-2.
Helliar was the only Blazer to advance to the "A" quarters. Senior Danny Manlow was a 6-3, 6-2 first round winner over Southern Miss' Andrew Goodwin but lost in three sets in the second round, falling to Jason Zafiros of Florida State, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
UAB junior David Zimmerman, seeded fourth in singles in the "A" draw, was upset in his opening round as he fell to Julian Belair of North Florida, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Daniel Moser also won his opening round match (6-2 6-1 over Santiago Lobelo of Bethune-Cookman) but fell in his second round bout in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (11), 6-1) to FSU's Andres Bucaro.
UAB's other singles participant, James Gardner, fell in his first match of the day in "B" singles as he lost to Jovan Zelikovic of Southern Miss, 6-0, 6-4.
