Men's Tennis Team Bounces Back With Solid Showing Saturday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team bounced back from a tough first day Friday at the Dale Short Shootout with a solid showing Saturday against the host Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders.
After getting swept by Conference USA foe Memphis in both singles and doubles a day earlier, the Blazers took singles matches at the top four spots in their lineup against MTSU. UAB also claimed wins in two of three doubles matches against the Blue Raiders.
David Zimmerman was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over MTSU's Ben Davis while Danny Manlow downed Matthew Langley, 7-5, 6-2. Also winning for the Blazers Saturday in singles was Daniel Moser who defeated Dimitri Pippos, 6-2-, 7-5. UAB's Chris Helliar was extended to three sets but rallied to take a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Ettore Zito.
Blazer sophomore Lucas Dirube lost a tight 6-4, 7-5 decision to the Blue Raiders' Marlon Brand while MTSU's Forrest Edwards took a 6-1, 6-2 decision over James Gardner. Nick Iannuzzi lost to Middle Tennessee's Cameron Dickerson, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the Blazers' team of Helliar and Manlow won over Davis and Zito, 8-4. Moser and Zimmerman cruised past Brand and Pippos by an 8-1 score. MTSU got their lone doubles win with a 8-6 victory by Edwards and Langley over UAB's duo of Dirube and Gardner.
The event will continue Sunday when the Blazers take on Southern Illinois.
