BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team began its second week of spring practice on Monday, going in full pads for approximately two hours at Legion Field. The morning session, which was the fourth of 15 practices during spring ball, was moved from the UAB practice fields due to wet conditions.
It was the second time during spring drills that the Blazers donned full pads, and second consecutive practice after Saturday's full pad workout. Despite it being the fourth practice of the spring season, UAB head coach Neil Callaway admitted that Monday's session was not as good as he had hoped.
"It was a little sloppy to be honest," Callaway said. "We have people missing because of class and other distractions, but we just have to tighten some things up and come out here on Wednesday and do a much better job.
"We did some 11-on-11 stuff, and nobody really stood out," he continued. "We have a long way to go on both sides of the ball. We have to do a better job at run blocking and defending the run. We have to be a more physical football team than what we are now. Hopefully we will come back out here Wednesday and get a lot more done.
"We are depleted at certain spots and it's just a problem. I will probably look at adjusting what we do and do a better job at planning. We have these core guys at this time and we are going to do what we need to do instead of having everyone running back and forth."
The Blazers wil practice Wednesday and Friday of this week, before holding their first scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday.
