Men's Tennis Team Falls to Harvard, 6-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ----- The UAB men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Harvard here Friday at the Hilton Mission Valley Spring Classic.
The Blazers (3-7) picked up their lone win in the match at No. 6 singles as freshman Chris Helliar downed Joshua Tchan, 6-1, 6-3.
Harvard (8-7) won the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions and then captured victories in five of six singles matches.
David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz took a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles for the Blazers but Helliar and Danny Manlow lost a tight 8-6 match at No. 2 to the Crimson's Jonathan Pearlman and Tchan. Andy Nguyen and Alistair Felton were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles over UAB's duo of Lucas Dirube and Daniel Moser.
In singles, Harvard was a winner at the No. 1-5 positions. Pearlman defeated Zimmerman at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0. Felton won a narrow victory over Dirube, edging the Blazer freshman by a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) score. At No. 3 singles Aba Omodele-Lucien got past UAB's Manlow, 6-1, 7-5.
Nguyen provided the only three-set win in the match as he rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over UAB's Puetz. Casey MacMaster gave Harvard another win with his straight-set victory at No. 5 singles over Moser, 7-5, 6-1.
UAB will continue play Saturday with their third and final match of the tournament as they take on No. 53-ranked Princeton.
