TULSA, Okla. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won straight set matches in four singles positions as the Blazers cruised past Oral Roberts, 4-0, here Saturday.
The win gave the Blazers (2-3) a split of two matches they played in Tulsa this weekend. UAB dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 38-ranked Tulsa on Friday.
Due to UAB's travel plans, the Blazers and Golden Eagles (1-3) opted to play singles first Saturday rather than doubles, and UAB claimed the win with victories at the No. 3-6 positions. Freshman Lucas Dirube clinched the match for the Blazers with his 6-2, 6-2 win over ORU's Dmitry Suslov at the No. 3 spot.
Daniel Moser (No. 4), Chris Helliar (No. 5) and Tom Puetz (No. 6) also were winners for UAB.
Moser cruised past Dario Beslic, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles while freshman Helliar was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 5 over Matthew Tansil. At the No. 6 singles position, Puetz blanked the Golden Eagles' Matthew Prevost, 6-0, 6-0.
David Zimmerman and Danny Manlow were in the third set of their matches at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, when the Blazers clinched the win and halted the match.
UAB will be back in action Tuesday when the Blazers play host to North Alabama at the Lakeshore Tennis Center (1 p.m. CT).
