Helliar Shines For Blazers At ITA Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. ----- UAB sophomore Chris Helliar won a morning Round of 32 singles match before falling in the afternoon Round of 16 Friday at the USTA/ITA Men's Tennis Southern Regional Championships.
Helliar advanced to the Round of 16 with his third consecutive win in straight sets as the native of Bournemouth, England disposed of Alabama's Stuart Kenyon, 6-2, 6-2.
Helliar later was ousted from the tournament as he fell to Andreas Mies of Auburn, 6-2, 6-4, in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, UAB's Danny Manlow, seeded in the 17-32 group, lost his Round of 32 match to Auburn's Alex Stamchev (seeded 5-8), 6-1, 6-3. David Zimmerman, another Blazer seeded in the 17-32 group, fell to second-seeded Louis Cant of Mississippi State in the Round of 32, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, both of UAB's entries came up short on Friday. Helliar and Manlow lost to the Alabama tandem of Jarryd Botha and Rens Van der Vis, 8-6, while Daniel Moser and Zimmerman dropped an 8-4 match to Auburn's Lucas Lopasso and Rafael Rondino.
