BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team kept it close early, but a late run propelled Tulane to an 81-53 win on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena. Sophomore guard Amber Jones led the Blazers with 15 points and junior guard LaShaunda Pratt added 10.
Freshman forward Destiny Samuels recorded career-highs with nine rebounds and eight points as UAB falls to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA.
Tulane's Tiffany Aidoo led all scorers with 29 points, while Danielle Nunn chipped in 16 and Roshaunda Barnes added 15. The Green Wave improves to 13-2 overall and 2-0 C-USA.
The Blazers kept it within nine throughout the majority of the first half before heading to halftime behind by seven. Jones was the key reason the Blazers hung around as all 15 of her points came in the first half.
"I thought we played well in the first half and were able to hang with (Tulane)," UAB head coach Audra Smith said. "We did a much better job on the glass this game, but we just ran out of gas in the second half and couldn't get our shots to fall."
The Green Wave heated up in the second half, pulling away midway through the frame thanks to a 23-6 run. Tulane widened its lead to as many as 29 before earning the 28-point win.
Tulane finished the game shooting 49 percent compared to UAB's 37 percent and owned a 40-32 edge in rebounding.
UAB hits the road again to take on UCF Thursday. The Blazers and Knights tip off at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT in Orlando, Fla.
