BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Following a second-place finish over the weekend at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic, junior cross country runner Rhiannon Johns has been named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
Johns ran a personal-best in Memphis, finishing the 5K race in a time of 17:29.06 as she helped UAB to a third-place finish as a team. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, native also placed 11th in the Blazers' first run of the fall at Appalachian State's Mountaineer Open.
A mathematics major, Johns has excelled in the classroom. She carries a perfect 4.0 GPA and was selected to the Conference USA All-Academic Team last year as a sophomore. She is also a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and a two-time recipient of the league's Academic Medal.
Also a standout in track and field, Johns was the 2010 conference champion in the 10,000 meters. She was also an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection in track and a member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
Johns and the Blazer cross country team return to action Oct. 9 with a race close to home. The team will compete at the Southeast Cross Country Showdown at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:35 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
