Men's Golf Team Finishes 13th At John Hayt Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's golf team finished play Tuesday at the annual John Hayt Intercollegiate, closing in 13th place overall with a three-round tally of 910 (312-298-304). The 15-team field featured eight teams ranked among the nation's top 35.
Despite the 13th-place finish, UAB finished one spot ahead of 26th-ranked North Carolina State, which closed the event four strokes behind the Blazers with a 914.
"We played a lot better today," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "This is one of the best rounds we played all year as far as consistency. The weather conditions were tough, but I feel good about how we finished this tournament."
Tournament host and 27th-ranked North Florida (876) cruised to the championship title by a 12-stroke margin over No. 33 LSU (888). Duke, ranked 30th in the nation, finished third with an 889, followed by No. 23 Alabama (895). Conference USA rival Tulsa and No. 25 Tennessee tied for fifth with both teams closing the event with an 898.
Senior Blake West played the most consistent golf of any Blazer throughout the three-day, 54-hole tournament, recording rounds of 75-77-75. West led all UAB golfers as he finished tied for 34th overall with an 11-over par 227. Senior John Darby finished a stroke back of West, carding a 12-over 228 to tie for 38th.
Redshirt freshman Austen Dailey, playing in his first tournament of the spring season, recorded the best round of any UAB golfer in the three-day event with his one-under par 71 during Tuesday's final 18 holes. As a result, Dailey (79-80-71) vaulted up the leaderboard to finish tied for 48th overall with teammate Adam West (81-73-76) at 14-over par 230.
Redshirt sophomore Blake Watts rounded out the UAB golfers, finishing tied for 72nd overall with a 242 (83-80-79).
North Florida's Joe Byun led the tournament wire-to-wire to capture the individual medalist honor with a four-under par 212. He finished four strokes ahead of teammate Sean Dale and Coastal Carolina's Dan Obremski, who both recorded an even par 216.
The Blazers will next be in action on March 8-9 when they compete at the Louisiana Classic in Lafayette, La.
