BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB track and field team will compete at the Conference USA Indoor Championships hosted by Houston this weekend.
The preliminary events for the two-day meet will begin at 9 a.m. CT on Friday at the Yeoman Fieldhouse with the heptathlon and pentathlon events, followed by field events at 2 p.m.
"We are really looking forward to the championships this weekend," UAB interim head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Our staff feels that the ladies are where they need to be training-wise, and are ready to go out there and give everything they have."
Friday's running events will kick off at 5 p.m. CT with the 5000m. Competition will continue until approximately 10 p.m. with the trials for the 800m, 60m, 400m, 60m hurdles, 200m and the distance medley relay.
"Our conference gets stronger and stronger every year, but I feel our ladies are ready for this challenge," Thomas said. "We are young, but we are not competing that way because Coach Boldon and Coach Thomas have done a good job getting them ready."
Saturday's action starts at 11 a.m. CT with the combined events. The field events will get underway at 1 p.m., followed by the running events at 3 p.m.
Leading the way for the Blazers this weekend will be junior high jumper Nora Mehl. Mehl was tabbed C-USA's Track and Field Athlete of the Week after provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet at the LSU Twilight with a leap of 1.81m (5-11.25). The Rottweil, Germany, native now owns the best jump in C-USA and is tied for 16th in the nation.
"We have great championship tested veterans who we will rely on, but we will also look for others to step up and perform," Thomas said. "If we compete to our capabilities the Blazers will do well."
At the 2009 Indoor Championships, UAB finished ninth and five Blazer athletes receieved All-CUSA Indoor honors, including Mehl and sophomore Kristina Vaughn.
Mehl finished third in the high jump with a height of 1.70m, while Vaughn was a member of the distance medley relay team that took third with a time of 11:53.90.
Mehl also finished fourth in the pentathlon (3,350 points), while junior Timara McMillan finished eighth (3,225 points).
