Three Blazers Advance To 3rd Round Of ITA Southern Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ----- Three UAB players moved into the third round of singles play after winning on the opening day of action here at the ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Meanwhile, two of the Blazers' four doubles teams in the field were winners Friday and advanced to the round of 16.
In singles junior Danny Manlow, seeing his first action of the fall after coming back from injury, along with sophomore David Zimmerman and freshman Chris Helliar advanced to Saturday's round of 32.
Manlow received a first round bye and then won over Tulane's Joe Young in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Zimmerman also had a first round bye before ousting Shaye Wali, also of Tulane, 6-1, 7-6.
First-year Blazer Helliar had a bye and then downed LSU's Stefan Szacinski, 7-5, 6-1, to move into the third round.
In doubles play UAB's duo of Zimmerman and Tom Puetz beat the Mississippi State team of Max Gregor Smith and Hrehan Hakeem, 8-5. The Blazer tandem will now meet top seed and No. 10-nationally ranked Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann of Ole Miss in Saturday's round of 16.
UAB's team of Manlow and Daniel Moser, seeded 5-8, also advanced to the round of 16. After a first round bye, they defeated the LSU duo of Olivier Borsos and James Turbervill, 8-6.
Other Blazers were also in action Friday. Nick Iannuzzi won his opening round match over Jacksonville State's Erix Matthieson, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, but then fell to Auburn's Tim Hewitt, 6-0, 6-2.
Junior Daniel Moser also won his first match Friday, defeating Etham Frenkel of Tulane, 6-3, 6-3. Moser then lost to No. 4 seed and No. 56-ranked George Coupland of Mississippi State, 6-1, 6-4.
John Hollimon dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Roger Anderson of LSU, 6-4, 6-3, in his second round match after receiving a first round bye.
UAB senior Dan Cornei lost to Jacksonville State's Nenad Marcec, 7-6, 6-3, while Puetz lost in three sets to Troy's Anas Rouchdi, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.
James Gardner had a first round bye before losing to Sebastian Carlsson of LSU, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Cornei and Hollimon lost to the Alabama team of Ian Chadwell and Michael Thompson, 8-5. Gardner and Hollimon won by an 8-5 score over Tulane's Adam Bernstein and Wali but then fell to No. 3 seed Jonas Lutjen and Tucker Vorster of Ole Miss, 8-1.
