UAB Tennis Players Advance At Georgia Tech Fall Invite

ATLANTA ----- The UAB men's tennis team had a trio of players advance with singles wins Saturday on the opening day of play at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational.
In doubles, UAB has a pair of teams still alive after winning two matches on Saturday. The Blazer tandems will now play in Sunday's semifinals.
Junior Daniel Moser was a first round winner in the "A" Flight Round of 32 while senior Dan Cornei and freshman Chris Helliar won their Round of 32 matches in the "B" division.
Moser eased past Matt Feury of North Alabama, 6-0, 6-1, and will now meet Georgia'a Ignacio Taboado in Sunday's quarterfinals.
In the "B" Flight, Helliar advanced with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Georgia State's Lucas Santana while Cornei was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Auburn's David Livingston.
Helliar will play Vanderbilt's Blake Bazarnik with Cornei meeting Clemson's Moritz Dettinger in Sunday's Round of 16.
The Blazers had three players fall in their matches on Saturday. Sophomore David Zimmerman dropped a tight 7-6, 6-4 decision to Winthrop's Sergey Belov in the "A" Flight while senior John Hollimon lost 6-4, 6-1 to North Alabama's Rob Whitsitt. Tom Puetz fell by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 score to Middle Tennessee's Kyle Wishing.
In doubles, the Blazer tandem of Puetz and Zimmerman defeated Vanderbilt's Bazarnik and Alex Zotov, 8-5, in the "A" Flight before downing the Auburn duo of Michael Wardell and Michel Monteiro, 9-8.
In the "B" Flight, UAB's Cornei/Hollimon team beat the Auburn pair of Davis Taylor and Livington, 8-3, in their first match. Later, the Blazer tandem defeated Lipscomb's team of Mario Hernandez and James Murrell, 8-4.
Puetz and Zimmerman, as well as Cornei and Hollimon, will now play in Sunday's doubles semifinals in their respective flights.
