LAFAYETTE, La. ----- Five UAB men's tennis players advanced in singles play Saturday at the UL Invitational as inclement weather cut action short for the second day in a row. The tournament is the first event of the fall schedule for the Blazers.
The event, originally scheduled to begin Friday, started early Saturday with singles play before rain halted play at mid-day. Because of the weather, all doubles and consolation play was cancelled for the tournament.
All but one Blazer participant advanced with wins on Saturday. In the A Flight, sophomore Danny Manlow, a transfer from Wofford, won his first match over Radu Ionescu of Nicholls State, 8-5, before moving on to the semifinal round by default over Anton Leonenko of Southern Illinois.
Daniel Moser dropped an 8-4 decision to Jean Charles Diame of Oachita Baptist in the A Flight.
All three UAB players advanced in the B Flight. Tyrone Ewels won by an 8-3 score over Markus Wessinhage of Southern Miss, Thomas Petrich took an 8-6 victory over Mikhail Vaval of Xavier of New Orleans and Alex Emery edged Benjamin Bouhana of New Orleans, 9-8.
Meanwhile, in the C Flight, UAB's Dan Cornei moved into the semifinals after winning by default in his opening match before defeating Piotr Olechowski of UL Lafayette, 8-3.
UAB's John Hollimon, seeded No. 3 in the D Flight, has yet to play in the tournament. He received a first round bye and is scheduled to see his first action Sunday in second round play.
