BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis will open its 2009 fall season this weekend when the Blazers travel to Lafayette, La. to participate in the UL Invitational.
UAB and nine other schools are scheduled to take part in the three-day event slated to begin Friday and run through Sunday.
UAB head coach Derek Tarr said his team will have seven competitors in the UL tournament, including six returning players.
"We have an experienced team this year and we're anxious to get on the court to go against some other competition," said Tarr. "We also are excited about our one newcomer this fall in Danny Manlow (sophomore transfer from Wofford College). I think Danny will be a good addition to our squad."
Manlow and teammate Daniel Moser are the Blazers' representatives in the "A" Flight of the UL Invitational. UAB will have three players in the "B" Flight in Tyrone Ewels, Thomas Petrich and Alex Emery. Dan Cornei is entered in the "C" Flight while John Hollimon is the Blazers' lone player in the "D" Flight.
Manlow and Emery will team in the "A" Flight of doubles, along with the duo of Ewels and Moser. The Ewels/Moser tandem are seeded third. In the "B" Flight of doubles, Cornei and Petrich are the No. 4-seeded team.
The tournament will be held at the Ragin' Cajun Courts.
