BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB cross country team will head to Huntsville, Ala., to compete in the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial Saturday morning. The women's 5K race, hosted by UAH, will start at 9:45 a.m. in Sharon Johnston Park.
"We're off to a fantastic start and the girls are ready to run fast in Huntsville," head coach Blake Boldon said. "Our collective fitness has progressed well and the team looks strong in training."
UAB will be one of 13 teams racing in Saturday's meet. Other schools in attendance will be Alabama A&M, UAH, Alabama State, Bevill State, Birmingham-Southern, Jacksonville State, Lincoln Memorial, Miles, Montevallo, North Alabama, Valdosta State and West Florida.
Last weekend UAB finished third out of a 12-team field at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn. Sophomore Rhiannon Johns was the top finisher for the Blazers, placing fifth overall with a time of 14:37.01.
"Rhiannon hopes to improve on her fifth-place finish from last week and it will be great to see Kristina Olsen start her senior season," Boldon said.
Senior Kristina Olsen will compete for the first time this season in Huntsville. Olsen was unable to run at the Belmont Opener due to a minor injury, but she is recuperated and ready to run Saturday.
Other top finishers for the Blazers last weekend included junior Stephanie Gammon, who claimed 18th place overall with a time of 15:00.65, and sophomores Colleen Standridge and Kristina Vaughn. Standridge posted a time of 15:16.31, while Vaughn finished close-behind with a time of 15:20.79.
