Moderator: Welcome to the live chat with UAB senior quarterback Joe Webb. We're about ready to get started with our first question. We have been accepting questions the past few days, but we invite you to continue to post questions for Joe during today's chat. |
| Mobile: What will be the difference this year in you as a football player(if any)when comparing last year? |
Joe: Hi everybody! I hope the biggest difference will be cutting down on turnovers. |
| Justin (Birmingham): Do you think you throwing to Frantrell can be as dynamic as the combo of Hackney and Roddy White! |
Joe: I don't know because Darrell and Roddy are some big shoes to fill. They made so many big plays for UAB. Me and Frantrell are definitely striving to have a big season. |
| Atlanta, GA: Hey Joe, this is Gerald S. (one of your biggest fans) and I've been following your football career since your prep days at Ensley and Wenonah. I notice that you have always played with a lot of energy and high intensity. Is there any type of pre-game ritual or something personal that you do before each game in the locker room that gets you pumped and ready for each game? |
Joe: Gerald, I try not to get too pumped in the locker room and try to stay as calm as possible. I listen to music like a lot of guys, but one thing I do that I don't know that anybody else does. I like to eat a few pickles. The spears kind are my favorite. |
| Scott Bynum (Birmingham): What are the team goals for this season? |
Joe: Our goals are to win a conference championship and go to the Liberty Bowl. |
| Louay (Chicago): What do you feel is the strength of this year's UAB football team? |
Joe: We have a lot of guys back who have good experience and have played together. I think our depth will be better than it's been the last couple years. |
| Tres K. (Morris, AL): I saw a youtube video of you running over someone during a practice. Can you explain what this was all about and who that was? |
Joe: Hey Tres! I'm sorry. You know it was an accident. I didn't see you there. You know the No. 1 rule at practice is never stand behind the quarterback! |
| Birmingham's Southside: This game is all about who can keep their poise under pressure. As a field general this year, whether you're on or off the field, how are you going to keep yourself and your teammates poised under pressure? |
Joe: I try to make sure everyone stays calm and keep their concentration, especially when things don't go our way. |
| James Collins, Edinburgh, Scotland: Hi Joe,
Other than passing skellys, what kind of drills do you work on and what are your favourites?
Good luck for the new season. |
Joe: Wow! I'm surprised to see a question from Scotland. James, I work a lot on improving my accuracy by throwing through a target net. I do a lot of work with ladder drills to improve my footwork. Hey, how's the food in Scotland? And do you play a bagpipe? |
| Rick (Birmingham): Can the Blazers win C-USA? Is this the team goal? |
Joe: Definitely, it's a goal. Everyone is motivated to make that happen. Obviously, we have to stay focused and take it one game at a time. Having so many returning guys, I think we have a chance. |
| Ed Sims, Rainbow City, Al.: Even though you have demonstrated that you are one of the most gifted quaterbacks in D-1 college football, what improvements can fans expect to see in your game this year. |
Joe: I've worked hard with the receivers this summer to get our timing down and to know their weaknesses and strengths. Fans can expect to see a lot of points and players making big plays! |
| Steve Jackson (Birmingham): What will be the most improved part of the team this year? |
Joe: Based on what I have seen in the spring and in summer workouts, I think it will be our linebackers and safeties. We have some new guys who are going to fill some holes on defense. |
| jerrell moore birmingham al.: Mr.webb let me start by saying wonderul job last year. My question for you is: Last year we lost a lot of games late what steps has the team taken to avoid these late game break downs |
Joe: The focus is to play the full 60 minutes. Some games, we had letdowns in the second half and we have to do a better job closing out the game and not getting too comfortable when we have a lead late in the game. |
| Merrill Denny (Fultondale): Are you going to play some WR this year? When you played two years ago no one could cover you 1 vs 1.
Thanks |
Joe: Thanks for the compliment and you never know. I always have my gloves nearby. Just come to the games and be ready for anything. |
| Michael (Opelka): Joe, what city is your favorite to visit in C-USA and any particular reasons? |
Joe: I would say Dallas, Texas. When we played SMU, the team made a trip to the JFK Museum where he was shot. That was really interesting to all the guys. They showed us where it all took place. I enjoyed that. And plus, the food is good. |
| Barry (El Cajon): Last season I thought the Blazers finished pretty strong, especially with the shutout against UCF. Do you think that gives you any extra momentum coming into this season? |
Joe: I think the UCF game was very important to us to close the season on a good note. It gave everybody a good feeling going into the offseason. We have to continue to build on what we did late last season. |
| Pj (homewood): Hey joe, Another question, although it's not really a UAB question, what are your aspirations after UAB? NFL maybe? |
Joe: First of all, my mama always stays on me about my grades, so my first goal is to graduate which I intend to do in December. But, yeah, playing in the NFL is the dream of every kid who plays football. But I know I have a lot of work to do this season before I take that next step. |
| Sadath Jean Pierre (Tallahasee, Florida): Has the defense improved over the summer? |
Joe: Yes, I think they have really come along. There will be some new faces out there who I think will help us a lot. |
| John (Birmingham): What players do you think will be the biggest surprises for the upcoming season? |
Joe: It's hard to say who exactly are going to be the biggest surprises because everybody has been working hard. I tell you what, you come to the Rice game Sept. 5th and give me your own opinion. |
| Linda Maddox (Hoover): What's the key to a good season? |
Joe: I think cutting down on turnovers and taking one game at a time. |
| Former Blazer New Orleans: What do U want to accomplish in your senior season? The schedule to me is tougher than last year. What is your thoughts on that and is getting to a bowl game the teams main goal? I will be at every home game. Go Blazers! |
Joe: Great, glad to have your support! This is my last year, so I definitely want to go out with a bang. Being in the hunt for the conference championship and going to a bowl game are definitely our goals. |
Joe: Thanks to everyone for joining us today. I enjoyed answering your questions. Hope we can do it again during the season. Stay blessed! |
Moderator: Thanks for all your questions. We will definitely be doing more chats with Joe and his Blazer teammates, and Coach Callaway! |
