BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team continued its spring practice schedule on Friday afternoon with a shorter-than-usual session that lasted a little over an hour at the practice fields. The Blazers are gearing up for their second scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway was pleased with the team's efforts during a lighter Friday practice and expects hard-nosed competition come Saturday.
"Today was good," said Callaway. "It was Friday so we came out in shells. We worked and did some things. We worked on the kicking game and one-minute drills at the end, but we backed off like last Friday to get ready for tomorrow.
"Hopefully, tomorrow will be a very competitive and hard-contested scrimmage. I want to see guys competing and working hard like always."
More specifically, Callaway will be paying close attention to the Blazer defense on Saturday after a less-than-satisfactory performance in the first scrimmage a week ago.
"Obviously, we need to play better defensively," said Callaway. "We especially need to play better up front. We have some short-comings personnel-wise at linebacker and safety. We are missing a few guys up front too, but we feel that the guys that are practicing on the D-Line right now are going to play, so they need to step up and do better."
