Blazer Tennis Team Beats UT San Antonio, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team took the doubles point and captured wins in the bottom three singles positions as the Blazers edged visiting Texas San Antonio, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
The Blazers (10-10) won their second match in as many days after defeating DePaul Saturday.
In beating the Roadrunners Sunday, UAB won doubles and then the first three singles matches to be decided to take a 4-0 lead and clinch the match. UTSA rallied with victories -- all in three-sets -- at the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles spots.
"This was another good win for us against a quality team," said head coach Derek Tarr. "I thought our guys stayed focused for the most part. Winning the doubles point and then getting off to a good start in singles with wins by Tommy (Petrich) and Tyrone (Ewels) were huge for us."
For the second straight day, it was junior Alex Emery who provided the clinching fourth point for the Blazers. Emery downed Max Stratmann at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
After UAB won at No. 2 and 3 doubles (Emery and Brian Ly at No. 2 and Ewels and Daniel Moser at No. 3), junior Petrich wasted no time giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead with his 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Jorge Delgado. Ewels made it 3-0 UAB with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Daniel Moreiras at the No. 5 position.
Soon after, Emery secured the win for the Blazers with his win at No. 4.
Ly and Moser both lost tight three-set matches in singles as did Cornei, who was the last player on the court for UAB.
Ly fell by a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 score to Rodrigo Morgado at No. 2 singles while Moser was outlasted by Pedro Zanotelli, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
Cornei lost a close match at the No. 1 position, falling to Andre Moreira, 4-6, 7-5 7-6.
UAB now will prepare for the upcoming Conference USA Championships, coming up April 17-19 at Orlando, Fla.
