BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through a relatively short and light workout Friday as the Blazers look ahead to Saturday's final spring scrimmage, set for 11:00 a.m. at Legion Field.
"We didn't do a whole lot today," said UAB head coach Neil Callaway following Friday's practice, No. 13 of 15 sessions this spring. "We mainly worked on our kicking game and we did some one-minute drills at the end. We were out here just in helmets, no pads. We wanted to try to keep them as fresh as we can for tomorrow."
No doubt, Callaway and his staff will have their eyes on the Blazer defense that has struggled each of the first two scrimmages, though there was marked improvement in the scrimmage last Saturday.
"First and foremost, we want to make sure everybody is playing hard," Callaway said of his defensive unit. "Then, you want to make sure that the guys you are counting on in the fall are doing what they are supposed to do.
"We have had a couple positions (linebacker and safety) that we have been so thin this spring, that it's not really fair to judge. We've got to wait until we get everybody here in August to see how it goes."
Starting quarterback Joe Webb is expected to play in only the first half of Saturday's scrimmage, according to Callaway. Webb has thrown for 650 yards with eight touchdown passes in the first two scrimmages.
