UAB Men's Tennis Team Defeats Santa Clara, 5-2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won the doubles point and then took wins at the No. 2-6 singles positions en route to a 5-2 victory here Saturday over Santa Clara.
The win for UAB (6-6) was its third in four matches this week since it began the west coast trip with a match Tuesday at California. Since the loss to the Bears, the Blazers have reeled off victories against Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
After winning the doubles point Saturday, UAB got singles wins from Brian Ly, Daniel Moser, Thomas Petrich and Dennis Ehrlich to take the win over the Broncos (2-6). All four of those victories came in straight sets, including Ly's match-clinching 6-2, 7-5 win over Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong at No. 3 singles.
Moser was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over the Broncos' Tommy Hicks at No. 4 while Thomas Petrich took a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Charlie Burke. UAB freshman Dennis Ehrlich cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over John Iwanski.
Santa Clara's two wins in the match came at the top two positions. Jay Wong won by a 6-3, 6-3 score at No. 1 singles over the Blazers' Slawomir Szeremeta. At No. 2 singles, Kyle Dandan rallied to down UAB's Alex Emery, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2).
UAB also claimed the doubles point for the third consecutive match, winning at No. 2 and 3. Emery and Ly teamed to defeat the Santa Clara tandem of Dandan and Hicks at No. 2, 8-0. Moser and Tyrone Ewels won by an 8-1 margin at No. 3 over Burke and Iwanski.
The Broncos were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles as Jay Wong and Hirakawa-Wong beat Szeremeta and Ehrlich.
